Q4 2023 Middle Market Private Equity Update

Back to news articles

GCG’s Q4 2023 Middle Market Private Equity Update provides an overview of the latest trends in the private equity market.

Key findings include the following:

  • Private equity middle-market deal value and volume continue to decline. Economic conditions relating to interest rates and available financing options have limited the investment appetite of PE.
  • The amount of capital raised by private equity, which has yet to be deployed, continues to rise. This capital has a specific time horizon and will be invested in the coming years. It is the basis of our stated opinion that the M&A environment in the coming years will be active and led by PE.
  • Recent quarters have shown a sharp decline in the lower end of the middle market for both deal volume and value. What was once the outlier for the PE universe has now been impacted significantly.
  • Based on early indications from 2024, we expect PE to be very active in the market. Will they have available deals to acquire? That will be the determining factor. We believe it is an ideal situation for potential sellers.
